Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sent a strong congratulatory message to Malawi’s newly elected President, Professor Peter Mutharika, following his victory over incumbent Lazarus Chakwera in the just-concluded elections.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Gachagua described Mutharika’s win as “a historic democratic victory” not only for the people of Malawi but also for Africa at large.
“Congratulations, President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika and the great and resilient people of Malawi, on their historic democratic victory. Your win is too consequential in the history of future African elections to be ignored by anyone,” Gachagua wrote.
He went on to emphasize that the outcome in Malawi was more than just a national triumph, but rather a continental statement, showcasing the strength of democracy and the power of the ballot across Africa.
“This election was more than a national triumph for the Republic of Malawi; it is a declaration that Africa, the rising continent and a home to 1.5 billion people, is no longer a playground for religious hypocrisy, conmanship, corruption, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes,” Gachagua added.
Citing Africa’s long history of authoritarianism, Gachagua noted that the fall of past strongmen—from Idi Amin to Mobutu and Mugabe—serves as a reminder that people’s power at the ballot remains supreme.
Turning to Kenya, he urged citizens to draw inspiration from Malawi’s courage as the country heads into the 2027 General Election.
“Kenya is equally watching, and Kenyans are wise people. Just like our Malawian brothers and sisters, we must reject fear, reject hopelessness, and reclaim our future through democratic means,” he said.
Gachagua also commended outgoing Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat and congratulating Mutharika, terming it a true demonstration of democratic maturity.
He concluded his statement with the phrase: “WANTAM IS A REALITY!”
Mutharika’s victory marks him as the 7th President of Malawi, in an election widely praised for its transparency and peaceful transition of power.
