Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has abruptly ended his tour of the United States. The move comes after growing public debate over the state of the opposition during his absence, with today’s Taifa Leo newspaper running the headline “Upinzani baridi bila Gachagua” (Cold opposition without Gachagua).
Gachagua, who has been on a multi-state U.S. visit engaging Kenyans in the diaspora, announced on his social media pages that while his trip had been “very successful and fulfilling,” he was unable to complete all the planned stops. He cited the need to return home to help his Democratic Congress Party (DCP) prepare for upcoming by-elections across the country.
“I regret being unable to visit the scheduled remaining States since I need to get back home to join our party, DCP PARTY, in preparation for the upcoming By-Elections in various parts of our country,” Gachagua said. “I am sorry to cut my trip short; my profound apologies to the organizers and Kenyans whom I were to meet; the same has been rescheduled to early next year.”
The former DP noted that he had taken a few days to rest before his return, adding that his itinerary would be made public as promised. He also expressed gratitude to Kenyans in the U.S. for their warmth and hospitality.
“I thank the Kenyans in the States for the love, warmth, and hospitality they accorded to us. I salute the organizers and officials of the DCP chapters for superb planning, organization, and meticulous coordination. You are simply the best. God Bless you all, and God Bless Kenya.”
Gachagua’s absence had become a talking point in political circles, with some observers claiming the opposition lacked its usual energy without his vocal presence. His early return is now expected to re-energize DCP activities ahead of the by-elections.
