Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies were met with an unexpected obstacle in Naivasha as they attempted to address residents after attending the Consecration and Installation Ceremony for Rev. Harrison Munyua at Redeemed Church in Naivasha Town.
To their shock, they learned that Naivasha OCPD had deployed police officers with apparent instructions to disrupt their engagement with the people. Despite this, Rigathi and his team remained undeterred, proceeding with their public address under tense conditions.
Rigathi’s Message to the Police and Military
During the church service, Rigathi urged police officers to resist being used as political tools by the government. He also took issue with recent remarks by Military Chief General Kahariri, who had stated that the army would not support the “Ruto Must Go” campaign. According to Kahariri, the military’s role is to uphold the constitution and prevent any unconstitutional overthrow of the government.
However, Rigathi countered this, arguing that Kenyans are not seeking an unconstitutional overthrow but rather expressing dissatisfaction with the current regime through democratic means, including the ballot.
Defying Police Deployment
Upon learning of the police deployment in Naivasha Town, Rigathi remained resolute, stating, “We know the government is using you, but we don’t have a problem with you. We promise to look into your issues.”
Despite the looming security concerns, he proceeded to address Naivasha residents briefly alongside his allies, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, and Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo. The team then traveled to Mai Mahiu, where they also addressed the locals.
While speaking to the crowds, Rigathi took a direct jab at the government, remarking, “Someone should tell the president that he can’t force himself on the people of Kenya.”
A Trend of Political Blockades?
This incident in Naivasha comes just a week after alleged hired goons hindered Rigathi and his team from addressing Nyeri Town residents after a church service. With the country entering a heated political season, such occurrences may become more frequent as tensions between rival factions escalate.
The question remains: Will these efforts to silence opposition voices succeed, or will they only fuel further political unrest?
