The Kiambu Liberation Movement (KLM) has strongly condemned calls by a section of Kiambu leaders to push for the county’s recognition as a region separate from the larger Mt Kenya bloc.
In a press statement released on Thursday, the movement singled out Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah for what they termed as “reckless and divisive remarks” regarding Kiambu’s place within the Mt Kenya region.
KLM maintained that Kiambu has always been an integral part of the Mt Kenya community, bound by history, culture, and shared economic struggles.
“The people of Kiambu have for many years worked hand in hand with our great brothers and sisters from every part of the region. This unity and love, bound by the selfless spirit of our people, has always birthed the strength and resilience of the region culturally and even economically,” the statement read.
The movement dismissed attempts to separate Kiambu as selfish and politically motivated, accusing unnamed leaders of advancing the agenda of what they called “an overambitious and oppressive regime.”
KLM further warned that such rhetoric was nothing more than an outdated tactic of divide-and-rule, adding that the youth and progressive voices of Kiambu would not allow disunity to take root.
Instead, the group urged leaders to focus on addressing the real issues affecting Kiambu residents and the Mt Kenya region at large. Among the pressing challenges highlighted were:
- Rising youth unemployment and lack of job creation.
- The high cost of living and unaffordable basic commodities.
- Rampant drug and alcohol abuse among the youth.
- Insecurity and crime in both urban and rural areas.
- Poor infrastructure, particularly feeder roads and markets.
- Underfunded schools and lack of support for education and skills training.
KLM called on leaders championing the separation narrative to retract their statements and redirect their energy towards policies that uplift citizens.
“History will not be kind to leaders who profit from disunity. We also ask our people, both young and old, to be on the lookout for betrayal, laxity, and non-performance by those they elected and respond accordingly at the ballot,” the statement added.
The movement reaffirmed its commitment to fighting for both political and economic liberation for the people of Kiambu and the wider Mt Kenya region.
“Kiambu is, and will always remain, an integral part of the Mount Kenya family — politically, culturally, and historically,” KLM declared.
The statement comes amid growing political debate in Kiambu, where some leaders have floated the idea of carving out a distinct identity for the county away from the traditional Mt Kenya framework.
