The 2025/26 football season will go down in history as the year the Kenyan Premier League officially rebranded to the SportPesa League, following a major announcement by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed.
In a statement shared through his social media accounts, Hussein Mohammed described the partnership as a “new dawn for Kenyan football,” marking a turning point for the country’s top-flight competition.
“Today, we officially unveiled the SportPesa League, marking a turning point for our top-flight competition. This new chapter is anchored on accountability, professionalism, and the commitment to restore pride in our game,” wrote the FKF president.
As part of the deal, league winners will now receive Ksh 15 million in prize money, the runners-up Ksh 3 million, and the second runners-up Ksh 2 million. This development is expected to boost morale among clubs, players, and fans while raising the competitive standards of the league.
Importance of the Partnership to Local Sports
- Boosts Financial Incentives
For the first time in years, teams will be rewarded with prize money that reflects the stature of a premier competition. This will encourage clubs to invest more in player welfare, infrastructure, and talent development. - Encourages Professionalism
With SportPesa’s backing, the FKF has emphasized accountability and professionalism. This creates an environment where clubs are motivated to operate transparently and sustainably. - Restores Pride in the Local Game
Many Kenyan fans have long criticized the lack of incentives and structures within local football. The new sponsorship rekindles hope and restores pride, making the league more attractive to both players and spectators. - Attracts More Corporate Support
FKF has called on more companies to join in supporting football. The SportPesa partnership sets a precedent that can inspire other brands to invest in local sports. - Promotes Talent Growth
A more competitive and financially rewarding league gives local players the platform to showcase their skills and potentially attract international opportunities.
A Brighter Future for Kenyan Football
The unveiling of the SportPesa League signals a new beginning for Kenyan football. With increased financial backing, improved professionalism, and renewed interest, FKF believes the league is on the right path to becoming one of the most vibrant competitions in Africa.
“We are grateful to SportPesa for believing in Kenyan football and walking this journey with us. I call on more corporate partners to join hands with us as we build our league into one of the most vibrant and widely followed competitions in Africa,” Hussein Mohammed concluded.
The spotlight now turns to the pitch, where players, coaches, and fans eagerly await the start of this historic season.
